The Stradbroke Courthouse has a long and varied history. Since 1850, it has served as a Corn Exchange, a Courthouse, a Youth Club, and a Library.  In 2014 it seemed that the Stradbroke Library would have to close and the building be taken out of use.  However, thanks to the campaigning of a group of committed residents, not only was the Library saved, but in addition, the building itself was entrusted to the village by Suffolk County Council.  The requirement was that it should continue to offer the library service and also make enough money to contribute to the running and maintenance of the building. To this end, the Court House Development Group met and has formed a new charitable trust called. ‘The Stradbroke Courthouse and Library Trust’, nowadays known by its initials SCALT.

At that time Stradbroke had lost its both its Post Office and its village shop and the village had become very quiet.  However, one innovative and imaginative feature of the rescue was the incorporation of a Post Office into the Library, a first for the UK.  This new Post Office provides 150 standard facilities including cash withdrawals, foreign currency and parcel handling.   it is run by the staff of Suffolk Libraries under their Library Manager, Maureen John.  They run it whenever the Library is open and all have undergone the necessary training.  As is only fair, Suffolk Libraries receive some additional income for providing this service.

The Courthouse building was considerably refurbished and modernised as part of the plan and the next innovation to be introduced was the Courthouse Café.  Run entirely by volunteers, it offers the chance for people to drop in for a hot drink and a snack on Thursday and Saturday mornings from 9.30 until 12.30.  The café has also been used on some Friday and Saturday evenings for themed meals with an international flavour also cooked and served by volunteers.  If you would like to help, volunteers are always most welcome.

Events held in the Courthouse Café and the Library are advertised in the Village Magazine and also on the ‘What’s On’ page of this website.    What's On?

PostOfficeServicesStradbroke's new Post Office is also in the Library and is open whenever the Library is. It offers a full Post Office service as is listed in the photo. If you want more information, please drop in or speak to Maureen.
