Ian McKellen plays a veteran con-man for whom lying is a way of life. Through a dating app he meets a well-heeled widow Betty (Helen Mirren) and settles into her comfortable suburban life that he describes as being ‘smothered in beige’. Despite her grandson’s reservations, Betty is determined to grasp some happiness whatever. McKellen and Mirren are wonderful in this plot full of deceptions and sparkiness. Is all what is seems? Who is really the fake?
